New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to review two rules ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. There has been a lot of debate surrounding the Impact Player rule introduced in the IPL ahead of the 2023 season. While many franchises favour continuing with the rule, others want it to be abolished.
However, the Impact Player rule is not the only major headache for BCCI. As per a report in Cricbuzz, BCCI is also set to review the two bouncers per over rule which was introduced in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and subsequently IPL 2024 earlier this year. The rule was brought to restore parity between bat and ball amid concerns that T20 cricket was majorly tilted towards the batters.
The move to allow two bouncers in an over was welcomed by many in the Indian cricket fraternity and used extensively by fast bowlers last season to get an edge over the batters. Only one bouncer per over is allowed in international cricket. While the BCCI is reviewing both the Impact Player and the two bouncer rules no decision has been taken yet.
“We understand that Impact Player and two bouncer rules are the key points and no decision has been taken,” an official of a state board was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
An idea about whether the two rules will persist in IPL 2025 or not can be gained after the BCCI confirms playing conditions for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25. The BCCI is yet to share playing conditions for the domestic T20 tournament.
Zaheer Khan shares his take on Impact Player rule
Former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who was recently appointed as the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) recently shared his take on the Impact Player rule. Zaheer said he stood in support of the rule as it allowed youngsters to get more chances in the league. However, not all franchises share LSG’s views on the matter and are not in favour of the rule being persisted with.
“There has been a debate around the impact sub rule. I’m going on record to say that I’m all for it. It has definitely given opportunities to a lot of uncapped Indian talents. It is something you will see in the mega auction when teams will be looking at them,” said Zaheer during a press conference in Kolkata where he was unveiled as a mentor of LSG.
BCCI is likely to confirm the playing conditions for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy soon and will subsequently also announce the rules for IPL 2025.
