In Gaza’s Crisis, Girls Forced to Cut Their Hair Due to Severe Shortages of Soap and Water

Dr. Lobna al-Azaiza, a pediatrician in Gaza, is facing an unprecedented crisis as shortages in basic necessities become increasingly dire. With the ongoing Israeli blockade and ten months of conflict, the region is struggling with severe shortages of essential items, including combs, shampoo, soap, and period products. This scarcity extends to waste collection and sewage treatment, leading to deteriorating sanitary conditions.

Health Impacts and Rising Diseases

Dr. al-Azaiza has resorted to advising girls without combs to cut their hair, a practical solution in the face of overwhelming shortages. The lack of hygiene products is exacerbating health issues, with scabies, fungal infections, and other skin diseases becoming more prevalent. “The most common issues we’re seeing are skin rashes and diseases, driven by overcrowding in camps, high temperatures in tents, and insufficient water for proper bathing,” Dr. al-Azaiza explained.
