In Sarabjot Singh’s presence, Post Department unveils postage stamps to celebrate Paris Olympics

New Delhi: Indian shooter Sarabjot Singh, who recently bagged a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 in mixed team 10m air pistol with Manu Bhaker, attended a Department of Post event on Monday in New Delhi. The significance of the event was to highlight the athletes who participate in the Olympics and commemorative postage stamps were released to indicate India’s support for the vision of Olympics.

Sarabjot was one of the guests present on the stage along with Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia (Union Minister of Communications & Development of North East Region) and Dr Mansukh Mandaviya (Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment). Speeches were delivered by the top dignitaries present at the event, highlighting the importance of sportsperson making their journey to the biggest platform of the sports.

The 22-year-old shooter from Ambala, Haryana, was given the opportunity to speak about his shooting and Olympics journey.

“I started shooting in 2016 under my personal coach Abhishek Rana at the age of 14. I got a gold in my first junior world cup in 2019. In my house, nobody was from sports background with some into academics and the rest were in abroad. Everyone would tell me to focus on academics and leave shooting but I was firm on shooting as it was my passion. I was never good in studies from the start,” Sarabjot said at the event.

A look at India’s Olympic journey through footage

A one minute and 17 seconds long clip was played to showcase India’s history with the Olympics with various flag-bearers carrying the Indian flag in the opening ceremony. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message was used as a voiceover for all the montages with Neeraj Chopra and Mirabai Chanu winning medals at Tokyo was put in the final minutes of the video.

India have so far won three medals in the Paris Olympics 2024 – all of them in shooting.
