Income Tax Challan correction: How to correct error on incometax.gov.in

New Delhi: The deadline to file your Income Tax Return (ITR) is just around the corner (July 31, 2024). There are chances of making mistakes if you rush through the process. One common area where mistakes can occur is when you fill Income Tax payment form. If you’ve earned money from selling property, mutual funds, or stocks, and the TDS isn’t enough to cover what you owe, you’ll have to pay capital gains tax yourself using the self-assessment tax option on the e-filing ITR website.

To do this, you will need to fill out a tax payment form (challan). You can do this either online or by printing it out and filling it in by hand. Make sure you complete this accurately to avoid any problems right before the deadline. But if you have made mistake, you can easily correct it. The Income Tax Department lets you correct mistakes in Income Tax payment slips.

How to correct your Income Tax challan?

You can use the challan correction feature on the e-filing ITR portal to fix mistakes related to tax payment details, such as incorrect amounts or other errors in the challan. Here’s a simple guide on how to correct a tax payment slip online using the e-filing ITR portal:

Step 1: Visit the e-filing ITR portal at https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec and log in with your credentials.

Step 2: Go to the Services tab and click on the ‘Challan Correction’ button.

Step 3: You’ll be directed to a new page where you should click on ‘Create Challan Correction Request’. This will take you to another page where you can select the details you need to correct in the challan. Click ‘Continue’ after making your selections.

Step 4: On the next page, either select the assessment year or enter the Challan Identification Number (CIN) to initiate the challan correction request. Click ‘Continue’ to proceed.

Step 5: Another page will open where you can update the challan details with the necessary corrections. Once you’ve made the changes, click ‘Continue’. A summary of the corrected challan will be displayed. Review it and click ‘Continue’ if everything is correct.

Step 6: On the next page, you’ll need to electronically verify the challan correction request using options like Aadhaar OTP, Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), Electronic Verification Code (EVC), or other available methods. After successful verification, a confirmation message will be shown.

If you miss the deadline for online submission of challan correction, you’ll need to submit a request letter to your jurisdictional assessing officer (JAO). Include relevant documents like a copy of the challan and your PAN card copy. Submit this at the ASK counter in the Income Tax office and obtain an acknowledgment. The JAO will then process your request accordingly.
