New Delhi: Young Indian batter Shubman Gill scored his fifth Test century during the third day of the first Test against Bangladesh on Saturday at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 25-year-old took a single off Bangladesh spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz to reach the feat and followed the trademark bow celebration before the crowd at Chepauk.
Gill remained unbeaten on 119 from 176 balls, pummelling 10 fours and four sixes from his willow, as India mustered a mammoth lead of 514 runs in the second innings. The India No.3 continued from his overnight score of 33 and played with a demeanour mindset. There were some fabulous cuts and pulls shown by the promising Indian batter against Bangladesh pacers Nahid Rana and Hasan Mahmud.
He was heavy against Mehidy throughout their battle with all four sixes of the innings coming against the off-breaker. Gill was also involved in 167-run partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who also notched his sixth Test century before getting caught by Mehidy of the latter’s own bowling.
India declare at 287/4
India declared their second innings at 287 for four, setting Bangladesh a daunting 515-run target to win the opening Test, here Saturday. Resuming at 81/3, India continued their domination on day three with comeback-man Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119 not out) completing their centuries with dominant batting.
Making a splendid return to Test cricket after 634 days following his horrific car crash in December 2022, Pant showcased his trademark strokeplay, bringing up his sixth Test century off just 124 balls. He also leveled the record of predecessor MS Dhoni as most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in the red-ball format.
Bangladesh were bundled out for a meager 149 on day two in response to India’s 376, as a record 17 wickets fell in a dramatic day’s play at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Jasprit Bumrah (4 for 50) led the wreckage for India.
