New Delhi: Ravichandran Ashwin was the key player for Team India in the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Indian all-rounder scored a century in the first innings and also picked up a five-wicket haul in the second innings.

He notched up 113 runs off 133 balls with the help of 11 boundaries and two maximums. Ashwin stitched a crucial 199-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket. His partnership with Jadeja rescued India from 144/6 and helped them to reach 376/6.

He took 6 wickets in the second innings and helped India to win the match by 280 runs. During the match, Ashwin also surpassed West Indian legendary bowler Courtney Walsh (519 wickets) in the list of leading wicket-takers in Test cricket and climbed to the eighth spot with 522 wickets in 101 matches.

The Indian off-spinner registered his 37th fifer in Test cricket and equalled the legendary Shane Warne to become the player with joint second-highest fifers in the history of the longest format.

This is also the fourth time in Test cricket that Ashwin scored a hundred and picked a fifer in the same match. Apart from Ravichandran Ashwin, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant also scored a century for the team while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep also made important contributions with the bat.

‘Ravichandran Ashwin is equally important’: Tamim Iqbal

Former Bangladeshi captain Tamim Iqbal praised Ashwin’s batting and said that his contribution is immense in Indian cricket. He also said Ashwin’s contribution is as big as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

“That was brilliant what he did, he was batting like a proper batter. I come from a different country. What I always hear is Virat Kohlis and Rohit Sharmas but Ravichandran Ashwin is equally important in my eyes. Because we only talk about when they do well, when they get the hundreds, they get five six wickets. But their contribution to this Indian team is immense. It’s as big as Rohit as big as Virat Kohli” Tamim Iqbal said on Jio Cinema.
