New Delhi: Head coach Gautam Gambhir has joined the Indian team for their first practice session ahead of the opening Test at Headingley, Leeds. He flew back to India to look after his ailing mother, who had been in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) after a heart attack.

He missed the senior team’s three-day practice match in Beckenham. Assistant coaches Ryan ten Doeschate, Sitanshu Kotak, and bowling coach Morne Morkel managed the preparations in his absence. According to multiple media reports, his mother is in much better condition, which has given Gambhir the sign to rejoin the squad.

The Test series will mark India’s first assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. The Men in Blue will play the first Test in Leeds from June 20, the second match at Edgbaston from July 2, the third Test of the series at Lord’s from July 10, the fourth match in Manchester from July 23, and the last Test at The Oval from July 31.

This will be Team India’s first Test series after the retirement of the star players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin. Shubman Gill will become India’s 37th Test captain after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format.
