IND vs ZIM, 3rd T20I: Need to be consistent, says Washington Sundar as he targets all-rounder slot

New Delhi: Washington Sundar realises he needs to be consistent to be counted among the top spin all-rounders of the country and play regularly for India.

The off-spinner claimed three wickets (4-0-15-3) to be adjudged the player of the match as India beat Zimbabwe by 23 runs in Harare on Wednesday.

With the win, India took a 2-1 series lead after going down in the first match at the Harare Sports Club.

“I need to keep my job consistently and keep preparing and keep getting better. That way everything will be taken care of,” Sundar said after the match.

With Ravindra Jadeja retiring from T20I cricket after India’s T20 World Cup triumph, Sundar is eyeing the spin all-rounder’s spot but has stiff competition from Axar Patel, who played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph.

“I need to do well where I am good at and what I am capable of, especially with my preparation. I need to give my 100 per cent every single day. That’s something that I have not compromised on,” he said.

In order to do well, Sundar said thorough prepararion is important for him to succeed.

“It (preparing well) keeps me in the present and obviously I am very confident as well (about his skills). It’s a great opportunity for me to play for India, and I am blessed with it.”

Sundar wasn’t part of the T20 World Cup-winning team, which is why he “needs to give his 100 percent” to stake claim for the all-rounder position in the Indian team, which will be now coached by Gautam Gambhir after the departure of Rahul Dravid.
