New Delhi: The Indian men’s football team announced a 25-member squad for the AFC Asian Cup Final Round qualifier match against Hong Kong on Thursday, June 5. The Blue Tigers will look to secure a big win against Hong Kong on June 10.
The match is important for India’s qualification campaign, with all the teams in Group C level on the same points after the initial round of matches. The Indian team travelled to Thailand with a 28-member squad for the FIFA international friendly, but head coach Manolo Marquez has trimmed his squad to 25 players for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifier.
Three players – defender Subhasish Bose, goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari, and defender Mehtab Singh have been released from the squad and will be returning directly to India. The remaining 25 members of the Indian team have now moved to Bangkok to continue preparations for the crucial match against Hong Kong.
India started their qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Bangladesh in March, and after the recent loss to Thailand, the pressure is mounting ahead of the important fixture. On Wednesday, the Blue Tigers lost against Thailand by 2-0 at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani. Benjamin Davis and Poramet Arjvilai scored goals for Thailand in the 8th and 59th minutes.
