New Delhi: Australia will have to be at their best to wrestle back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is equal in importance and prestige to the Ashes, opines Mitchell Starc.
The pacer is gearing up for the five-match Test series against India, which begins in Perth from November 22. India have kept the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, winning the last four editions of the series – home and away.
The rivalry between India and Australia has gradually grown into one of the fiercest rivalries in cricket, getting compared to the Australia vs England and India vs Pakistan contests.
Starc said not only for the fans, the Broder-Gavaskar Trophy is very important for the players as well as India are Australia are the top two teams in the ICC World Test Championship rankings.
“Being five matches now it’s probably right on par with an Ashes series. We always want to win every game at home and we know India are a very strong team,” Starc told Wide World Sports website.
Eye on WTC final
Australia beat India in the ICC WTC final last year at the Oval in London and the two sides are likely to meet in the final of the 2025 edition too, which would be held in Lord’s.
“As we’re placed at the minute we’re the top two teams on the Test ladder… so a very exciting series coming up for the fans and certainly the players,” the left armer said.
Australia’s last Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph was in 2014. They were beaten 1-3 in the last edition in India in 2023.
“Hopefully when we’re sitting there on the 8th of January we have that trophy back on our shores,” Starc said.
