New Delhi: The All India Chess Federation (AICF) has confirmed that India will host the 2025 FIDE World Cup after the global body of the sport showed varying signs of announcing the host nation. The FIDE had named India as the host on Monday for the prestigious event, which is scheduled between October 31 and November 27 this year. The latest update from FIDE was that the host will be announced soon.

The World Cup will be important for the top three players to grab a spot for the 2026 Candidates tournament. For India, it will be a matter of pride if one of the top-ranked players happens to win the eight-player Candidates in order to pose a challenge before reigning world champion D Gukesh in an all-India final for the World Chess Championship 2026.

According to media reports by Hindustan Times and The Indian Express, the AICF confirmed that the country will host the World Cup. A total of 206 players will compete in the global event to fight for the three crucial spots. Norwegian chess star Magnus Carlsen is the defending champion of the World Cup in 2023 after defeating Indian prodigy R. Praggnanandhaa in the final.

Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigiasi would be the other contenders from India to challenge for the Cup apart from Gukesh.
