India vs Pakistan, men’s hockey: History, records and head-to-head

New Delhi: Team India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the final group-stage match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 on September 14 at the Mogi Hockey Training Base in Hulunbuir, China. Harmanpreet Singh-led India currently tops the points table while Pakistan is in second position.

India vs Pakistan history

India and Pakistan ruled the hockey world until the early 1990s. Before the 1947 partition that created Pakistan, the Indian hockey team included players from both sides of the border, which now divides them. Team India won the gold medal at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympic Games.

The 1947 partition created two different countries, India and Pakistan, giving birth to a decades-long rivalry. In the 1950 and 1960, both countries won five medals between them. The arch-rivals clashed in three-finals out of which India won two. Both teams met in the 1975 World Cup, which was also won by India. Regardless of the tournament, sport or occasion fans from both countries eagerly wait for the meeting of arch-rivals.

Both countries played in three Asia Cup finals against each other. Pakistan won two out of those and India won one. Pakistan also have a record of winning the first three Asia Cups (1982, 1985, 1989) against India in a row.

In recent years, Team India has had the upper hand over Pakistan in hockey but Pakistan has been in great form recently and will look to beat Harmanpreet and Co. In the last encounter, India defeated Pakistan by 10-2 and recorded their biggest win against their neighbours in the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Head-to-head

India and Pakistan faced each other 180 times in men’s hockey. Pakistan won 82 out of them and India won 66 matches while 32 matches ended in Draw or no result.

But since 2013, both countries have faced each other 25 times in various tournaments. India won 16 of those matches and Pakistan won only 5 while 4 matches ended in draws.
