New Delhi: Indian batters faltered yet again in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, labouring to 51 for 4 as Australia remained in the box seat on a rain-hit Day 3 of the third Test at the Gabba, Brisbane on Monday.
After Australia were bowled out for 445 in the first session of the fourth day, India’s top order botched up against the Aussie pace attack and threw away their wickets to end a rain-interrupted day in a precarious position.
The play was stopped and started again on five instances as rain hung around Brisbane for most of the day. After the last inspection, umpires decided that 13.5 overs were to be bowled but three overs after the resumption, the play was officially called off due to bad light.
Australia dominates Day 3 despite rain interruptions
India find themselves in a bad situation after Day 3, needing to reach 246 to avoid the follow-on. The visiting side trails the hosts by 394 runs.
Earlier, Indian bowlers made sure Australia added just 40 runs to their overnight total as the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep bagged a wicket each to bowl out the home side for 445.
Bumrah’s brilliance outshone by India’s batting failure
Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers, finishing with superb figures of 6 for 76 in 29 overs.
Alex Carey played an entertaining 70-run knock from 88 balls after big hundreds by Steve Smith and Travis Head on the second day had laid the platform for a massive first-innings total.
Unlike the Australian batting lineup, Indian batters failed to apply themselves and fell like a pack of cards. Barring KL Rahul (33 batting), who showed guts against the fierce bowling attack, none of the Indian top-order batters showed the stomach to fight.
Mitchell Starc continued his rip-roaring form and dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in back-to-back overs to put India on the back foot. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli once again fell victim to the delivery just outside the off-stump as Josh Hazlewood, Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) teammate exposed the Indian batter’s long-standing weakness.
Brief Scores: Australia 1st Innings: 445 all out in 117.1 overs (Travis Head 152, Steve Smith 101; Jasprit Bumrah 6/76).
India 1st innings: 51 for 4 in 17 overs
