New Delhi: Indian boxer Nishant Dev made his debut in professional boxing against Alton Wiggins at the Cosmopolitan arena in Las Vegas on January 26 Sunday Nishant was also an Olympian before turning into a professional boxer. He also participated in the Paris Olympics 2024 but crashed out in the quarterfinals.
Nishant vs Wiggins’s bout was in the undercard of the Diego Pacheco vs Steve Nelson headline fight. Nishant’s prominent run in the Paris Olympics inspired him to become professional after crashing out in the tournament.
The 24-year-old fighter signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and upgraded his skills to match with other boxers in the professional arena.
“I enjoyed my time as an amateur boxer, competing at the highest level in the Olympics and winning a World Championship medal. But now, I’m ready for this new chapter.” Nishant stated after turning professional.
Indian boxer’s win marked the beginning of a new era in Indian boxing as many Indians before him fought in the professional arena but no one managed to mark their names in boxing. Nishant started his campaign with a super TKO win in the first round which showed the aggressive gameplan of Nishant.
Nishant attacked the body of Wiggins and finished him with a combination of a left and then a right hook to the face of Wiggins. Nishant was impressive on his feet as he was moving fast and tried to finish the opponent in the opening round.
After the victory, Nishant dedicated the victory to the Indian fans who are celebrating Republic Day on January 26.
Diego Pacheco becomes number 1 contender for Canelo Alvarez’s titles
In the main event of the night, Diego Pacheco was against Steven Nelson. Pacheco defeated Nelson via unanimous decision and became the new number one contender for Canelo Alvarez’s titles. All the judges favored Pacheco in nine rounds, while Nelson won only three rounds in the fight.
