Indian economy skyrocketed after 2023 ODI World Cup; ICC reveals astronomical amount

New Delhi: The 2023 ODI World Cup made a gigantic impact on the Indian economy, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC). The report revealed that the marquee event made an “economic impact” of USD 1.39 billion (Rs 11, 637 crore) with tourism among the biggest beneficiaries. The report was released by the world cricket’s governing body on Wednesday.

The Economic Impact Assessment was conducted by Nielsen, an American media audience measurement firm. The report claimed that the marquee cricket event held in October-November 2023 was the biggest-ever ODI World Cup.

“The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, generating economic benefit of USD 1.39 billion (Rs 11,637 crore) for India,” ICC Chief Executive, Geoff Allardice said in a statement.

The 2023 ODI World Cup was grand in terms of sporting perspective as well. In what was an extraordinary tournament, hosts India dominated all the participating teams, entering the final unbeaten. But the Indian juggernaut was stopped by the mighty Australians, who ended India’s unbeaten run to win the trophy for a record-extending sixth time.

Riding on a magnificent Travis Head century, the Aussies crushed Indian hopes of ending the trophy drought, beating the Asian giants in an ICC tournament final for the second time in the year.

Tourism and food industry the biggest beneficiaries

The ICC statement also revealed in detail the impact of tourism across the host cities. The revenue generated alone from tourism amounted to USD 861.4 million, which included accommodation, travel, transportation and food and beverage. The biggest reason behind the massive revenue generation was the influx of domestic and foreign tourists attending the matches.

The report further claimed that the secondary and incremental spending within the economy generated USD 515.7 million – almost 37 per cent of the total impact.

According to the report, a record-breaking 1.25 million spectators attended the biggest cricketing spectacle with nearly 75 per cent new attendees.

International travellers played a key role in the revenue generation of USD 281.2 million by visiting multiple tourist destinations during their stay. A total of 68 per cent of international attendees also said that they would recommend India as a tourist destination to friends and family.

The tournament delivered in terms of job creation with over 48,000 full and part-time employment openings created by the event.
