The Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile ticketing app was inaugurated by Indian Railways on 27th December 2014. After passing through various tests on security, rescue, as well as the customer experience, the structure was first introduced on the Mumbai suburban network only and gradually extended to nearly the whole country. The UTS app also enables users to purchase tickets from the stations of choice for up to a distance of 200 km before the date of travel.
On the 14th of March, 2018, the Ministry of Railways made an official statement that service charges for the credit or debit card payment on ticket purchases at the UTS/PR Business Rules were no longer in place.
If you ever need to cancel a ticket booked via the UTS app, a specific process must be followed:
Step 1: First, access the UTS app and enter your login information; once inside, click the Cancel button.
Step 2: A new window is opened that shows all the available tickets for cancellation. The cancellation fee is uniformly ₹30. Tickets which cost less than ₹30 will not be displayed in this window. To continue with the cancellation steps, the next option to select is the “Cancel Ticket” link.
Step 3: You will be presented with another pop-up that will confirm whether or not you want to cancel the ticket. Press “OK” to confirm cancellation.
Step 4: A message will appear on the screen declaring the total amount of refund in your transaction after the deduction of cancellation charges.
The adoption of the UTS mobile ticketing system was incrementally expanded to other metro cities such as Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Secunderabad between 2015 and 2017. UTS mobile ticketing has been operational for inter-zonal travel across the Indian Railways since 01 November 2018 with the provision of making bookings between any two stations in the country for the passengers.
