New Delhi: The ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, a decades-long dream to connect Kashmir with the rest of India by train, has taken a giant leap forward as the trial train has successfully traversed the entire Sangaldan-Reasi section, including the iconic Chenab Bridge (Sky bridge), marking a crucial milestone in the project’s completion.
This remarkable feat achieved by the Indian Railways was announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishaw in his X post. The project brings India’s highest rail bridge, standing at 359 meters above the riverbed, closer to becoming a reality. With only a small section of tunnel No. 1 remaining incomplete, the USBRL project is now poised for completion by year-end, he said.

The successful electric engine trial on the Sangaldan-Reasi section has paved the way for the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inspection, scheduled for June 27 and 28. Once the CRS clears the 46 km stretch, the section is set to be commissioned, bringing the dream of seamless rail connectivity to Kashmir one step closer.
The commissioning of this section, along with the completion of the remaining stretch between Reasi and Katra, will revolutionize travel and trade in the region, opening up new economic opportunities and strengthening the cultural fabric of the nation.
The Chenab Bridge, a marvel of engineering, is set to become a major tourist attraction, further enhancing Kashmir’s allure. The USBRL project, with its breathtaking infrastructure and the promise of a unified nation, stands as a testament to India’s relentless pursuit of progress and development.
Last month, the General Manager of Northern Railway Shobhan Chaudhuri inspected the Chenab Bridge up to Sangaldan station via Motor Trolley, assessing the track, Electrical and Mechanical system and signal telecom works in the Bakkal-Duggar-Sawalkote-Sangaldan section.
Chaudhuri also conducted balance activities for completing the work of Sawalkote yard, Tunnels T-42 and T-43 with engineers of Northern Railway, IRCON and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL).
“The train service from #Ramban (Sangaldan) to #Reasi via the world’s highest railway bridge built on river Chenab to begin soon. The #Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (#USBRL) project will be completed by year-end,” Union Minister Jitendra Singh wrote on ‘X’.
