New Delhi: Inter Milan superstars Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez will sit out Major League Soccer’s All-Star Game with injuries.
The American league and the club announced that Messi will skip Wednesday’s game against Mexico’s Liga MX All-Stars at Columbus, Ohio, with an ankle injury while Suarez is suffering from a knee discomfort.
Messi, fresh from winning the Copa America with Argentina, missed Miami’s last two MLS games with a right ankle niggle. He suffered the Injury during Argentina’s 1-0 wi over Colombia in the Copa America final.
Suarez’s injury was aggravated in Uruguay’s third-place game against Canada. Suarez scored a goal in Uruguay’s 4-3 win on penalties after the match was tied 2-2 after extra time.
Messi and Suarez’s Barcelona mates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are expected to play in the game.
“Messi will miss the All-Star Game due to an ankle injury while Luis Suarez, who recently returned from international duty after over 40 days away from the club, will miss the All-Star Game due to knee discomfort,” Inter Miami said in a statement.
Messi and Suarez have both scored 12 goals each for Inter Miami with the former also registering 13 assists, joint second best in the league.
The 37-year-old Messi joined Miami last July and led them to inaugural Leagues Cup crown. Had Messi been available to play, it would have been the first MLS All-Star appearance for him.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has helped Inter Miami go on top of the Supporters’ Shield standings with 52 points.
Messi and Suarez remain doubtful for Miami’s home game against Mexico’s Puebla on Saturday, with the club saying their availability will be evaluated on a
daily basis.
