New Delhi: Every year on September 13, International Chocolate Day is observed. The day gives us a platform to celebrate our love for chocolate. The high consumption and demand for chocolate is prevalent almost all over the world and there are countries which are famous for their production of chocolate. Countries that are known for their chocolate
1. Belgium
Belgium is one of those countries which are famous for chocolate. According to reports, there are over 2,000 chocolate shops all over the country. The Belgian chocolate is unique in the sense that it is only cooled at the end of the production process, enabling the product to retain its aroma. The chocolate in Belgium is also almost entirely handcrafted.
2. Switzerland
Switzerland is famous for its Swiss chocolate and the most popular brand is Lindt. What makes chocolate production interesting is that even though the climate of the country is not suitable for growing cacao plants, the organisations find a way to produce chocolate anyway. According to reports, an average Swiss consumes more than 10 kilos of chocolate every year.
3. United Kingdom
The famous chocolate brand Cadbury originated in the United Kingdom and sold coffee, and drinking chocolate in the 1820s. In the 1850s, it even supplied chocolate to Queen Victoria. It later produced Dairy Milk chocolate which has become famous all over the world.
4. Germany
Germany is one of the leading chocolate exporters in the world. In 2020, the chocolate exports from Germany amounted to $4.96 billion. Cologne is regarded as the chocolate hotspot in Germany and chocolates from there are exported to the US. The country is home to Stollwerck Chocolates Company and other famous brands in Germany are Tortchen, Leonidas Chocolates, and La Maison du Chocolat.
5. Italy
Italy is one of the leading manufacturers of chocolates. Chocolate production is an important source of wealth in Italy. In 2020, the country’s chocolate exports amounted to $2.1 billion. Interestingly, it accounted for over 7 per cent of the total chocolate exports of the world.
6. Ecuador
Ecuador produces some of the best cacao beans. However, only around 5 per cent of the world’s cacao is called “Fine Aroma”. Interestingly, Ecuador produces about 63 per cent of the ‘Fine Aroma’. Ecuador not only exports its cacao but also produces its own chocolate. One of the most popular chocolate brands in the country is Paraci.
