New Delhi: Every year, on October 1, the International Day of Older Persons is observed worldwide to raise awareness of issues related to elderly people across the globe. In almost every country, elderly people face some sort of problem. On this day, those issues are highlighted and all the major parties, starting from the government discuss and take steps to alleviate those problems.
How did the day originate?
On December 14, 1990, the UN General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. Before this day, there was the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing which the World Assembly on Ageing adopted in 1982 and later, the UN General Assembly endorsed it.
Why is the day celebrated?
In 1980, the number of older people was around 260 million and by 2021, it increased to 761 million. The percentage in their population will increase, as per estimates, from less than 10 per cent to around 17 per cent between 2021 and 2050. The increase in the number of elderly population brings forth the need to promote healthcare and prevention and treatment of illnesses. We need to adjust to the rising number of active elderly individuals. They can remain active and independent with proper support as they progress in age.
What is the theme this year?
This year, the theme of the day is “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide”. Life expectancy at birth is now over 75 years in many countries, and it is 25 years more than what it was in 1950. According to estimates, the population of older persons will surpass that of the youth by 2030, especially in developing countries. It has altered the caregiving landscape, especially for those who have dementia. The theme highlights the urgent need to increase education and training in geriatrics and gerontology and increase the number of caregivers while also addressing their importance in the scheme of things.
