International Day of Persons with Disabilities: History, theme, importance and more

New Delhi: Every year on December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated all over the world. The day is observed with varying degrees of success in different countries and it aims to make everyone understand disability issues and garner support for the rights, dignity and well-being of persons with disabilities. Also, it makes us aware of the gains we can make from integrating persons with disabilities in every aspect of their political, social, economic, and cultural lives. Until 2007, the day was called “International Day of Disabled Persons”.

How did the International Day of Persons with Disabilities begin?

In 1976, the United Nations General Assembly declared 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons and it all began with that. It urged everyone to form a plan of action and emphasised equality of chances, rehabilitation and prevention of disabilities. In 1992, the United Nations began the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

What is the significance of this day?

Every year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development. Also, the day aims to make everyone aware of the situation of people with disabilities in social, political, economic, and cultural life. The WHO, along with the UN observes this day every year. The day reinforces the significance of securing the rights of people with disabilities. It will enable them to participate equally, fully, and effectively in society with others without facing any barriers.

What is the theme this year?

This year, the theme of the day is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”. The leadership of persons with disabilities is epitomised by the slogan of the global disability rights movement “Nothing About Us Without Us”. It calls for the need for participation, representation and inclusion of persons with disabilities to shape their lives. The theme of 2024 aims to underscore the importance of leveraging the leadership of persons with disabilities to ensure disability-inclusive and sustainable peace and development for all.
