International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2024: Know the theme and its meaning

New Delhi: International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is annually observe on May 29 to honour the extraordinary contribution of peacekeepers to international peace and security. In addition to honour volunteers, the day is annually observed to mark the establishment of the first-ever United Nations Peacekeeping mission, which was conducted in May 1948. The inaugural mission was well known as the “United Nations Truce Supervision Organization” (UNTSO) and the volunteers were first deployed in Palestine, aiming to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Various commemorative events and ceremonies based on specific themes take place annually at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This year, the events will revolve around the theme, “Fit for the Future: Building Better Together.”

The theme highlights the crucial role of UN Peacekeeping in helping countries transition from conflict to peace over the past the past 75 years. Additionally, it extends support to the New Agenda for Peace of the Secretary-General to address future crises and conflicts effectively. It emphasises the importance of enhancing collaboration and innovation to tackle the rising challenge of peacekeeping. UN Peacekeeping operations continue to adapt to the unique needs and circumstances of each mission, with the changes adhering to the significant changes in global conflicts.

Brief about UN peacekeepers

Since the establishment of UN peacekeeping in 1948, over two million peacekeepers have made a significant contribution to 71 missions, helping countries navigate the difficult journey from war to peace. At present, over 76,000 peacekeepers from more than 120 nations are deployed on 11 global missions. Their dedication, commitment to ensuring peace, and hard work help foster peace and stability for millions impacted by conflict.

Despite evolving challenges, Peacekeepers have always been steadfast in protecting civilians, safeguarding and transforming lives and promoting peace.

International Day of Peacekeepers Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all partners in peace, including humanitarian organisations, UN agencies, the local communities, media professionals, host governments, troop and police contributing countries, member states, and many others.
