International Men’s Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness about issues that affect men, such as parental alienation, abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence. This day also celebrates the lives, achievements, and contributions of boys and men, especially their roles in family, community, and society.
Thomas Oaster started the International Men’s Day project on February 7, 1992, but it was first proposed on February 8, 1991. The project was revived in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago. Malta has the longest-running International Men’s Day celebration, starting on February 7, 1994. Malta was the only country celebrating the February date until the Maltese AMR Committee decided in 2009 to move the date to November 19.
Jerome Teelucksingh, a historian who revived the day, chose November 19 to honour his father’s birthday and to recognise that on this day in 1989, Trinidad and Tobago’s football team brought the country together in their quest to qualify for the World Cup. Teelucksingh promotes International Men’s Day as a time to address all issues affecting men and boys. He emphasises that the day and its grassroots supporters work toward gender equality and aim to change the negative stereotypes about men.
Unlike International Women’s Day, the United Nations does not officially recognise International Men’s Day. International Men’s Day is a time for everyone to recognise and celebrate the men in their lives.
