New Delhi: As months close on towards the year’s end, the developments regarding the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season are already making headlines. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the much-speculated retention rules for the franchises ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, concerning which, a fresh report has claimed that it will be held in November this year outside India.
As per a Cricbuzz report, the auction will take place likely during the third or fourth weekend of November and will almost certainly be held overseas, as revealed by the IPL sources. The BCCI has already indicated to the franchises about this possibility. The auction for last year took place in Dubai and it shouldn’t come as a surprise if this year’s edition is held in another Gulf city like Doha or Abu Dhabi.
Saudi Arabia, a nation that is spending quite a lot in the sports sector lately, including cricket, is also interest in hosting the auction as per the reports. There is yet to be a clarity on the venue at the current stage. The news hasn’t arrived well for the IPL franchises, who are yet to receive the rule for player retention to lay out a proper plan for the upcoming mega auction.
The BCCI has conveyed them of a potential delay in announcing these rules which has left several officials of the franchise concerned about the time shortage they will face in order to adequately prepare for the auction. Cricbuzz had earlier reported that the rules may get announced this month which means that the teams get a two month period to do all the auction plannings.
The last date for the teams to announce their retained players is said to be around November 15. The report also added that the IPL and BCCI have always wanted to hold the auction overseas but could succeed only last year. In the previously held seasons, the authorities were planning to host the auction in London and Istanbul as well but nothing could turn out to be the case.

Meanwhile, it is understood that coaches who worked under Rahul Dravid with the Indian team are likely to find positions with various IPL franchises. Vikram Rathour, India’s former batting coach, might join Dravid at Rajasthan Royals. In that scenario, he will replace Trevor Penney, who could be assigned to Barbados Royals, the CPL hand of RR. Paras Mhambrey, India’s ex-bowling coach, on the other hand, could also join a franchise but nothing has been finalised so far.
The report also claimed that these former coaches declined the commentary offers made to them as they expressed their prefernces for coaching roles. It has also been reported that 2011 World Cup winner and former pacer, Munaf Patel, is likely to coach an IPL franchise this season.
According to a report, the highly-awaited mega auction for the upcoming IPL season could be scheduled overseas like the previous year and is expected to be held in November. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
