New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has been handed a hefty fine of Rs. 24 lakh after his team committed a second over-rate offence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The Royals were penalised for maintaining a slow over rate in their clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The Titans won the match by 58 runs as the Royals failed to chase the target of 218 runs, getting folded for 159.
According to the Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, a skipper is fined for Rs. 24 lakh for a second over-rate offence in the season and it is already understood that the IPL has done away with the match suspensions for a third offence. The rest of the players in the playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either Rs. 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lesser, as stated in an IPL media release.
Earlier in the ongoing tournament, the IPL had imposed a fine of Rs. 12 lakh on then RR skipper Riyan Parag as his team failed to meet the required over-rate in the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last month. In the game, Samson was only playing as an Impact Player because of his finger injury. The inaugural IPL champions’ second offence came in their third loss of the season in five matches.
RR, GT campaign so far
RR had won their last two games on the bounce, reviving themselves from the two straight losses in the initial two games, but found themselves off track again in the fifth game. They are currently placed seventh on the points table
Meanwhile, GT are reigning on the top of the points table with four back to back wins and only a loss in their five games. They would next face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on April 12, while the Royals would take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Jaipur on April 13.
Rajasthan Royal’s first over-rate offence was under Riyan Parag’s captaincy in a game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last month. RR was again found lagging behind the minimum over-rate on Wednesday. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
