New Delhi: Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel has been handed a fine of Rs. 12 lakh as his team maintained a slow over rate during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Delhi on Sunday. The game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium turned out to be a thriller, with the visitors eking out a win out of a match that looked gone.
DC endured their first loss of the season, and Axar Patel was one unhappy man with a gloomy face during the handshakes. To add to their disappointment, the Capitals failed to meet the required over rate, and Axar was fined Rs. 12 lakh as it was his first slow over rate offence in the season, according to Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. The IPL has moved away from match suspensions, and there are only fines and in-field restrictions.
What went into the game?
DC conceded 205 runs in their homecoming game, as they strode out to chase and became favourites to win the game at one stage. It was a comeback knock of 89 from Karun Nair, which lifted the spirits of the DC fans, and they only needed 66 off the last eight overs with seven wickets still in hand. However, they kept losing them at regular intervals and suffered a hat-trick of run-outs in the penultimate over to fall 12 runs short of the win.
“We had the game. I think we had soft dismissals from the middle order, some bad shots. We lost by 12 runs with an over to go, so we could have still won it. It can’t happen that your lower-order batters will always save you in chases. There are some odd days when you play wrong shots, so I don’t think there is any point in thinking too much about it,” Axar said after the game, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Earlier in the cash-rich league, MI skipper Hardik Pandya, Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson, and Challengers Bengaluru’s Rajat Patidar have also been handed fines for over-rate offences.
Delhi Capitals were found to be lagging behind the minimum over rate, in the MI game on Sunday, and skipper Axar Patel was therefore struck with a fine, as per the IPL Code of Conduct. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
