New Delhi: The important meeting between The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and the owners of all ten IPL franchises ended on July 31 in Mumbai.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Many franchise owners were against the mega auctions with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) owner Shahrukh Khan and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran leading the debate.
Both teams reached in the final of the IPL 2024 and the owners want to hold on to their key players. As per the same report, KKR owner Shahrukh Khan and Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia were engaged in a heated debate, over the number of player retentions.
After the meeting, Wadia denied the reports and said he had known Shahrukh for more than 25 years and owners gave their views as everyone wanted the best for the IPL “I have known Shah Rukh for more than 25 years. There is no animosity here. Everyone gave their views, and they had their opinions. At the end of the day, you have to look at all the stakeholders and do what’s best for all. That’s most important” Ness Wadia said to Cricbuzz.
SRH owner Kavya Maran who supported KKR against the mega auction said that it takes a lot of time and investment to build the squad. She gave an example of Abhishek Sharma and said that it took him three years to become consistent with his performances and there are many such examples in other franchises as well “It takes a lot of time to build a squad and as discussed it also takes quite a bit of time and investment for the younger players to mature”.
Parth Jindal, the owner of Delhi Capitals (DC) is in favour of the mega auction and against too many retentions. He said some franchises don’t want mega auctions and he was surprised by this debate “I was surprised that there was debate on whether to hold the big auction. There should be only smaller auctions. I’m not in that camp. It makes the IPL what it is. It makes it competitive”.
Jindal also said that he was against the continuation of the Impact Player rule and some franchises want it because it gives a chance to young players to play in the IPL while others are against it. He also said that all-rounders are important and the Impact Player rule affects the all-rounder’s role in the games.
The rule was criticised by many players during the IPL 2024 including Rohit Sharma, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc. Eight out of the nine highest scores in IPL history were made in the 2024 season with SRH breaking the record for highest IPL total twice in the tournament.
Many owners were present in the meeting including Rupa Gurunath of Chennai Super Kings, Sanjiv Goenka of Lucknow Super Giants, and Manoj Badale of Rajasthan Royals while many attended the meeting via video conference.
