Iranian Artist Arrested For Singing in Public Without Wearing Hijab

Tehran: A young Iranian woman has been arrested and jailed for singing without a hijab in public. A video showing Zara Esmaeili went viral showing her standing in the middle of the street, singing Amy Wineshouse’s ‘Back to Back’ song.

As per media reports, Zara was taken into custody as her video went viral. A source familiar with the situation confirmed that Zara’s family is unable to locate her.

In a post shared by a user on X read, “Zara Esmaeili, a talented young singer from Tehran, has been arrested for her courageous performances without the mandatory hijab. This powerful image of her and a dancing girl illustrates how the young generation in Iran is resisting oppression. #Iran.”

The Iranian woman is said to be known for her performance in public spaces such as metro or parks without the mandatory hijab.

Many see Zara’s performances on the streets as a form of protest against the Islamic Republic’s oppressive laws, which restrict women’s freedom and expression.

Faravaz Farvadrin, also an Iranian singer and the founder of the Berlin-based Right to Singh Campaign commended Zara’s arrest and said, “Zara, an Iranian female singer, is imprisoned in the Tehran Central Detention Center (Fashafoueh) for the crime of singing in public. She is under the pressure of the interrogators to admit connection with activists and musicians outside Iran. This claim is a lie and made by the think tank of the Islamic Republic.”

This recent arrest comes as the latest example of Iran’s strict enforcement of the mandatory hijab laws for women despite being heavily criticised by the people of the country and several other nations.

In 2022, clashes erupted in Iran after Mahsa Amini died in police custody. Mahxsa was visiting Tehran with her brother where the “morality” police forcefully arrested her. As per eyewitnesses, police pushed her into a van and beat her, taking her to the Vozara detention centre in Tehran.

Hours after her arrest, several media reports claimed that the “morality” police had subjected her to torture and other ill-treatment inside the police van, including beatings to her head. And days later she succumbed to her injuries.
