IRCTC rejects ‘false’ messages on e-tickets; updates on bookings for family, monthly ticket limits

New Delhi: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has categorically rejected the claims on social media suggesting that certain restrictions have been put in place in regards to e-ticket bookings on the platform. IRCTC which provides ticketing, catering and tourism services dismissed the messages claiming that ticket booking is restricted due to passengers having different surnames. It termed the messages on social media as “false and misleading.”

The IRCTC said that it has imposed no new restrictions on e-ticket bookings and tickets are available in accordance with the Railway Board Guidelines. IRCTC released its statement after messages reading ‘New rules for booking IRCTC ticket’, ‘people can only book tickets for blood relations or those with the same surname, using personal ID and individuals booking e-tickets tickets for friends or others on IRCTC website or app could lead to a penalty of Rs 10,000 or a jail term were doing rounds on social media.

“The news in circulation on social media about restrictions in the booking of e-tickets due to different surnames is false and misleading. The concerned should be discouraged from spreading such false news,It is clarified that tickets from IRCTC site are being booked as per Railway Board Guidelines” IRCTC stated in its statement which was released on X, formerly known as Twitter.

One can book tickets on personal User ID for friends, family and relatives

Booking can be done for up to 12 tickets per month which in case of Aadhaar authenticated users can go up to 24 tickets per month, if one of the passengers on a ticket is also Aadhaar authenticated.

Tickets booked on personal Aadhaar IDs are not meant for commercial sale and such an act is an offence under Section 143 of Railways Act 1989.

IRCTC allows users to book train tickets through Internet from 00:20 am to 11:45 pm (Indian Standard Time) on all days including Sundays. Opening day booking for train: (120th day in advance, excluding the date of journey) will be available only after 8 am.

 IRCTC released its statement dismissing rumours about restrictions on e-ticket bookings based on different surnames.
