IRCTC ticket booking service down: Passengers unavailable to book train tickets

Numerous people who wanted to buy railway tickets were inconvenienced on Thursday, December 26, 2024 when the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) mobile app and website were not functioning for an hour.

The situation was admitted by IRCTC. It sent out a message saying that ticketing service was not available due to technical reasons. Significantly, it happened for the second time in this crucial portal of IRCTC.

When would IRCTC app, portal revive?

“Due to maintenance activity, e-ticketing service will not be available. Please try later,” the IRCTC said in a statement. According to reports, the outage in this crucial service began at 9:47 am. Despite the IRCTC admitting the glitch, it was not mentioned by when would the problem will be resolved and the IRCTC portal and mobile app would start functioning again.

For the lakhs of Indian Railway passengers IRCTC is an extremely useful platform. It provides ticket booking services including tatkal, search and availability of trains, detailed information on trains, checking PNR status of tickets purchased, checking probability of ticket confirmation, e-ticket management and making payments.

How many tickets purchased every day via IRCTC

Available data indicate that around 7.31 lakh tickets are booked every day on average through the IRCTC app. IRCTC has a registered user base of 6.6 crore, which is very close to the total population of England. Unfortunately, the outage happened during the Tatkal booking period. This led to anger and frustration building up during the crucial hours and many passengers vented frustration on social media.

Interestingly, the IRCTC stock stood at Rs 782.35 around 11:30 in the morning after declining Rs 6.45 or 0.82%. The 52-week high and low of this scrip is Rs 1,138.90 and Rs 777.20 respectively. The outage on December 26 came just weeks after Indian Railways made changes to its ticket booking policies from November 1 when the peirod of advanced reservation was brought down from 120 days to 60 days.
