New Delhi: Smoking is considered to be one of the biggest vices when it comes to health and wellbeing. It is associated with lung cancer, hypertension, ageing, heart attacks and every possible health problem you could think of. But when it comes to passive smoking, most people do not realise that it is just as risky and sometimes even worse when it comes to health. Passive smoking is when one is exposed to tobacco smoke while spending time with someone else who is smoking. And while many assume that this habit is safer, doctors say that it much worse and comes with almost the same set of health problems. Read on to know what doctors have to say about the effects of passive smoking.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr Ranganath R, Senior Consultant, Pulmonologist, Narayana Health City, spoke about the effects of passive smoking on health.
“Both active and passive smoking are hazardous. Active smoking directly introduces toxins that increase risks of lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses. However, passive smoking, or secondhand smoke, is equally dangerous, containing many of the same harmful chemicals. Non-smokers, especially children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or heart disease, are particularly vulnerable,” said Dr Ranganath.
“Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory infections, and developmental issues. Pregnant women exposed to passive smoke can suffer from complications like low birth weight and preterm delivery. It’s crucial for these high-risk groups to completely avoid environments where passive smoke is present to safeguard their health,” the expert added.
How does passive smoking affect health?
Dr Amit Sharma, Consultant – Medical Oncologist at Narayana Hospital, Howrah, also spoke about the same and listed the symptoms of smoking-related health problems as well.
“Active smoking and passive smoking both pose significant health risks to individuals. Active smoking increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease respiratory issues, and various other health conditions. Passive smoking, on the other hand, can also lead to similar health problems in non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand. Both forms of smoking can affect the lungs, heart, and blood vessels, leading to potential damage and decreased overall health,” said Dr Sharma.
Warning signs of smoking-related health issues include:
Persistent cough
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Increased infections
To prevent these risks, individuals should avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and seek medical help if experiencing any concerning symptoms.
