Islamabad: Pakistani-American businessman Ali Sheikhani is facing a wave of online criticism after announcing he would gift Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem a Suzuki Alto for winning gold at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem achieved an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, while India’s Neeraj Chopra took silver with a throw of 89.45 meters.
Reports circulated that Sheikhani would present Nadeem with a new car in recognition of his historic achievement. This announcement was first made by Pakistani activist Syed Zafar Abbas Jafri in a video. The news was subsequently shared on X, with a fan writing, “Update: Pakistani-American businessman Ali Sheikhani has announced a brand new Suzuki Alto for Arshad Nadeem for winning the gold medal in Paris. Well deserved.”
However, the announcement quickly attracted backlash on social media. Critics took to various platforms to express their disappointment, noting that the Suzuki Alto, priced at approximately Pakistani Rupees ₹23.31 lakh (over ₹7 lakh in Indian rupees), seemed inadequate for Nadeem’s monumental achievement.
While some supporters expressed their happiness for the athlete, many others mocked Sheikhani for what they considered a modest gift. One user commented, “This is an insult… he deserves a BMW or Audi.” Another questioned the legitimacy of the gesture, asking, “Is this a joke or something?” and another wrote, “Alto??? Why? Couldn’t find anything cheaper?!? It is your first gold! Get something worthy of it!” Another echoed this sentiment, stating, “Alto? Are you serious? Shame on you!”
