New Delhi: Cricketer-turned-commentator Isa Guha has invited a new controversy after her alleged remarks over Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah have come into the public domain. As per news reports from 7News, Guha, during her commentary stint with Fox Cricket, reffered the fast bowler as a ‘Primate’. Guha was in conversation with former Australian pacer Brett Lee on-air on the second day of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match between Australia and India.
Lee was pointing the impact of Bumrah made in the match from the Indian team’s perspective as the bowler claimed figures of 5 for 72 at the end of the day, which was his career’s 12th Test fifer. Lee said:
“Bumrah, today: five overs, 2-4. So, that’s the tone, and that’s what you want from the ex-skipper.”
As per the 7News report, Guha responded to Brett Lee’s comment, saying:
“Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah.”
“He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match, and whether he would be fit.”
According to the definition of ‘Primate’ available in the Cambridge Dictionary, it means ‘a member of the most developed and intelligent group of mammals, including humans, monkeys, and apes’.
However, the context of India-Australia rivalry might not sit well with the usage of such terms given the reference of the ‘Monkeygate saga‘ involving former cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds. It happened during the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy where Harbhajan was accused of calling Symonds ‘monkey’ in the Sydney Test.
The former Indian spinner was initially suspended for his alleged remarks, but the challenge from Indian players led to the decision being revoked.
In the matter of Isa Guha, either of the commentator or broadcaster (Fox) haven’t made any statement over the allegations.
Isa Guha sparked controversy with an alleged on-air remark referring to Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah as a “primate” during a Fox Cricket broadcast. The comment was made during a discussion with Brett Lee during the second day of the third Test match between Australia and India.
