Washington: A U.S. senator has confirmed that the bomb used by Israel to kill Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut last week was an American-made guided weapon.
In an interview with NBC, Mark Kelly, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee, revealed that Israel used a 2,000-pound Mark 84 series bomb which is also known as bunker-buster because of its ability to penetrate underground in the attack. This is the first time that the U.S. has indicated what weapon was used in the strike.
US Weapon Used in Targeted Strikes
Kelly said, “We see more use of guided munitions, JDAMs, and we continue to provide those weapons. That 2,000-pound bomb that was used, that’s a Mark 84 series bomb, to take out Nasrallah.”
Israel Confirms Nasrallah’s Death, Remains Silent on Weapon Details
The Israeli military confirmed on Saturday that they had killed Nasrallah in a strike targeting Hezbollah’s central command headquarters in Beirut’s southern suburbs. However, they have not disclosed what specific weapons were used in the operation. The Pentagon has also not provided any comment so far.
Hezbollah also confirmed the death of its leader Nasrallah, after Israel announced that he was killed in an airstrike on Beirut last week. The killing has escalated the tension between Israel and the Iran-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah.
JDMA Technology Converts Standard Bombs to Precision Weapons
The Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) system mentioned by Kelly converts standard unguided bombs into precision-guided weapons using fins and a GPS guidance system. The U.S. has long been Israel’s key ally and main supplier of arms, regularly providing advanced weapons systems for Israeli military operations.
