‘It would be cool to be part of an Olympics’: Steve Smith excited on T20 prospect at LA 2028

New Delhi: Australia regular Steve Smith, who surprisingly sat out of the team’s T20 World Cup 2024 failed campaign, continues to feature in the Big Bash League (BBL) for Sydney Sixers. He recently signed a three-year deal with the franchise which tells he isn’t going to keep himself away from the T20I format and is totally looking forward to playing in the Olympic Games with the T20I team in Los Angeles four years later (in 2028).

For those unversed, cricket has been inducted as a sport in the Olympics, starting from 2028. With David Warner hanging his boots from Test and white-ball cricket, Smith pursued the opener’s role for the Sixers but did not impress to back himself. Rumours ran rife that the 35-year-old might be wuitting one of the formats but the ex-skipper is hopeful to stay for a little bit longer.

“I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know. It’s a format I can see myself playing probably for a lot longer than some of the others, especially with the franchise stuff around the world. I’ve signed on here for three years so it’s only another year after that. It would be cool to be part of an Olympics,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Smith as saying.

“I don’t have any plans. I’m just enjoying playing at the moment, I’m pretty relaxed and looking forward to this summer,” Smith further added.

Smith on Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India will be up against the Australians in a five-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy starting in November. Along with many players, the series would be a strenuous test for Smith as well. He has been dismal in red-ball cricket for quite some time now and as he still remains far from the T20I team, he can eye a spot for Australia in the one-day format with the India series.

“You can’t really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series for instance. If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It’s going to be a wonderful series,” Smith said.

Steve Smith is too far from a retirement as he recently revealed he is looking forward to playing at the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, keeping himself open for the T20 format.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
