Ottawa: In an unusual turn of events, New Democratic Party (NDP) leader and Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh evoked laughter and mockery during his press conference on Tuesday. The NDP leader well known for his pro-Khalistani stance, demanded a ban on the RSS and sanctions against the Indian diplomats.
Speaking at the press brief, Jagmeet said, “We support today’s decision to expel India’s diplomats and we’re calling on the Government of Canada yet again to put diplomat sanctions against India in place, ban the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Network (RSS) in Canada, and commit to pursuing the most severe consequences for anyone found to have participated in organised criminal activity on Canadian soil.”
He further alleged that this is a serious matter saying, “The briefing confirmed what was shared publicly, that this is a very serious allegation. It confirmed some of the background of how we got here. Really what it highlighted is that we’ve got the Indian government, specifically the Modi government, that is engaged through diplomats in Canada, criminal elements that have then gone on to shoot at Canadian homes, to shoot at Canadian businesses, to kill Canadians. That is very serious.”
“As the RCMP mentioned, the briefing also mentioned, that there are deep concerns for Canadian safety, and that’s why I really believe it is our responsibility, if we believe in protecting our country, I love this country, we need to do everything possible to keep people safe and to keep our democracy safe,” he added.
However, a video shared on X showed journalists at the press conference mocking Jagmeet Singh over his remarks, with one journalist can be heard saying, “That’s not how it works.”
India-Canada Tensions Escalate Over Nijjar Killing
Jagmeet’s comments come as tensions between India and Canada continue to complex with Ottawa hinting at the potential sanctions against Indian officials. Notably, the Trudeau govt has thus far not provided any concrete evidence to support its claim.
As the diplomatic ties between the two nations suffered another setback, India, rebuffing Ottawa’s allegation, not only recalled its High Commissioner from Canada and other diplomats but also ordered expulsion of six of Canadian diplomats from New Delhi. India has repeatedly denied the allegations and said that Canada is harbouring terrorist groups and promoting separatist activities.
US Backs Canada’s Charge Against New Delhi on Nijjar Killing as India Holds Ground
Amid an escalation in diplomatic row between India and Canada over Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing, the United States has alleged that India is not cooperating with Canada on the latter’s investigation into the killing.
“When it comes to the Canadian matter, we have made clear that the allegations are extremely serious and they need to be taken seriously. We wanted to see the government of India cooperate with Canada in its investigation. Obviously, they have not chosen that path,” news agency PTI quoted State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller as saying.
