New Delhi: World No.1 Jannik Sinner is still trying to make peace with what slipped through his fingers in Paris. The Italian, who came agonisingly close to winning his first French Open title, has opened up about the emotional aftermath of his heartbreaking five-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Despite holding three championship points in the fourth set, Sinner couldn’t close the deal, and Alcaraz clawed his way back to script one of the most dramatic comebacks in recent Grand Slam history.
The match that lasted for five hours and 29 minutes etched itself into the record books as the longest men’s final ever played at Roland Garros. It was a battle of willpower and nerves, and while Alcaraz celebrated a career-defining moment, Sinner was left to reflect on what could have been.
Speaking in his pre-tournament press conference at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle said, “I’ve already had a few sleepless nights, but I think every day it gets better. My family stands behind me, and my friends. That is the most important thing for me. Tennis is important in my life, but nonetheless, family and friends are more important. I still think often about the match.”
“It always depends on how you manage to react and what you choose to see.
I can focus on the missed match points — or see a match where I’ve never played that well on that surface, where I stayed mentally locked in for five and a half hours.”

The Italian did not involve any complex plans to recover from defeat; he simply headed back to Italy and spent time with his family. The 23-year-old also said that he played table tennis to recover from the loss, and the same helped him keep his mind off the defeat.
Looking ahead
Sinner is known for his mental resilience but bouncing back from such a crushing disappointment was never going to be easy. Still, he seems determined to turn the page and build on the progress he made during the 2024 grass-court season. With a fresh mindset and renewed focus, the World No. 1 will return to action on Monday at the Terra Wortmann Open, where he begins his title defense against a qualifier aiming not just to win, but to move forward.
