New Delhi: Jannik Sinner steamrolled Alexander Zverev in the final to clinch his second successive Australian Open title on Sunday, January 26. The world no.1 created history by becoming the first Italian to win three Grand Slam titles with his memorable victory in the summit clash at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Sinner produced a dominant show in the final to cap off an incredible run at the tournament.
It was a clinical performance from Sinner, who dominated the proceedings in the final from the onset and looked in cruise control throughout the match. The Italian didn’t offer a single break point to Zverev and wrapped up a thumping 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory in just three hours to continue his winning streak in Grand Slam finals. Sinner has been in three Grand Slam finals in his career so far and has won all three, maintaining a perfect record.
Sinner headed into the tournament embroiled in a doping controversy after twice testing positive for traces of steroid clostebol in March last year but he swept aside the doping scandal, showcasing mental resilience to reach his second consecutive final at the Australian Open after beating USA’s Ben Shelton in the final.
Despite being a slight favourite, the head-to-head record was stacked against Sinner as Zverev led 4-2 in the six meetings between the duo, including two hard-court victories. However, Sinenr had beaten him in their last meeting at the Cincinnati Open semi-finals last year and made it two wins in a row to clinch his third Grand Slam title in style.

Sinner has won three Grand Slam titles in a row on hard courts after his maiden Australian Open triumph last year while Zverev’s wait for his first major title continues. The German was aiming to become the first from his country since Boris Becker to win a Grand Slam title but his wait was extended once again after a dismal show in the final.
Jannik Sinner thrashes Alexander Zverev in straight sets
It was annihilation in the final from a ruthless Sinner, who gave Zverev little chance of plotting a comeback at any point in the match after winning the first set comfortably by 6-3. In the second, Sinenr once again started in a similar fashion as Zverev was forced to save two break points early. The German did manage to stage a fightback to force a tiebreak at 6-6.
But Sinner once again brought his best on the court in the tie-breaker to clinch it 7-4 with three points in a row and take the second set to take a step closer to victory. A frustrated Zverev was seen smashing his racquet in fury after the second set. Sinner once again raced to an early 3-2 lead in the third set before going 4-2 up.
He went on to close the set comfortably to win the final in straight sets, becoming the youngest man to defend his Australian Open title since Jim Courier in 1992-93.
