New Delhi: Defending champion Jannik Sinner defeated Marcos Giron by 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Saturday. The Italian player dropped a set for the first time in 14 matches in his second-round match against Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate but there were no such hiccups for the World No.1 as he won the match in just over two hours.

The Italian was off to a great start, serving well and providing an early break. Marcos netted a backhand in the second game and fell behind. Jannik produced a fine performance in games three and five, forging a 4-1 lead in the first set. Marcos gave his best in game six and denied a break point. He held the Italian at love in game seven and served for the opener at 5-3 but Sinner made a comeback and won the opening set by 6-3.

The World no.1 converted the second set point in 34 minutes with an ace for 6-3. Both players started the second set well but Giron faced issues at 2-2, losing serve and falling a set and a break behind. Sinner saved a break point in game six with a great serve and held for 4-2. He held serve to lead to 5-3 and then served for the set at 5-4. The Italian fought back in the game and sealed the set with a forehand winner after an hour and 18 minutes.

The last set was far more intense with both players trading numerous break points but after being broken at 2-1, Sinner broke straight back and then broke again to win the third set by 6-2.

After the match, Sinner said that he is very happy to reach in the next round and every match had its own difficulties. He further added that in today’s match, Marcos was very solid from the back of the court and served well.

“I still have room to improve, but every win is great. Trying to stay there mentally, which I think is the most important aspect for us tennis players. But for sure, if I want to go on in this tournament I have to improve” he added.
