Jasprit Bumrah injured? Prasidh Krishna gives worrying update on pacer after Day 2

New Delhi: In what comes as a huge setback for team India, Jasprit Bumrah has a back spasm and had to be taken for scans to a hospital in Sydney during Day 2 of the ongoing fifth Test between India and Australia on Saturday. Bumrah had left the field after bowling just one over during the second session on Day 2 and was later spotted leaving for hospital with the Indian team’s support staff.

His Indian teammate Prasidh Krishna confirmed Bumrah’s injury and revealed the stand-in skipper had to leave the field due to a back spasm. However, the extent of Bumrah’s discomfort with the back is not known yet as Prasidh revealed the team management and the medical staff are waiting for the scan reports from the hospital.

Bumrah’s back spasm is a massive jolt for Team India as the pace spearhead is crucial to their chances of pulling off a victory in the must-win 5th Test in Sydney. While the series is on the line, India’s hopes of remaining in the race for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final also depend on the result of the Sydney Test. A defeat or a draw will send India out of the race for the WTC final.

“Jasprit Bumrah has a back spasm. He went for scans. The medical team is monitoring him and we will know when the results arrive,” Prasidh told the broadcaster after the conclusion of Day 2’s play between India and Australia at the SCG.

However, Prasidh refused to confirm if Bumrah will return to take part in the Test match on Day 3. While his heroics with the ball will dictate India’s chances during Australia’s run-chase in their second innings, Bumrah’s contributions with the bat in the tail will also be valuable for India in their 2nd innings. The visitors finished with a 145-run lead after ending Day 2 on 141/6 and will be hoping Bumrah can turn out to bat on Day 3 before resuming bowling duties during the hosts’ 2nd innings.

When Jasprit Bumrah broke down at MCG

Bumrah was overused by skipper Rohit Sharma during the 4th Test against Australia in Melbourne where he was asked continuously to bowl from one end even against tail-enders Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland, who frustrated India with a fifty-plus stand for the 10th wicket. Bumrah bowled a total of 53.2 overs in the 4th Test at MCG and broke down at one point.

Bumrah was spotted telling Rohit that he had bowled enough and didn’t have anything left in his tank when asked to continue bowling during Australia’s 2nd innings. The 53.2 overs bowled by Bumrah in the Melbourne Test was the most overs bowled by him in a single Test match in his career so far.

Bumrah has been India’s best bowler by a distance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and his workload has often been under the scanner. In the ongoing 5th Test in Sydney, he bowled only 10 overs in Australia’s first innings before leaving the field due to a back spasm. Bumrah picked up two wickets in his spell to extend his tally to 32 wickets in the series so far, breaking the record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in a Test series in Australia.

Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna provided an update on Jasprit Bumrah’s injury after the conclusion of the 2nd day of the ongoing 5th Test between India and Australia in Sydney. Bumrah was taken to the hospital for scans earlier on Saturday.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
