New Delhi: Pace spreadhead Jasprit Bumrah was named the vice-captain as India announced a strong squad for the Test series against New Zealand beginning this month. The series will start with the first Test match in Bengaluru on Wednesday, October 16. Bumrah’s name as the vice-captain in the 15-member squad indicates that the pacer will be groomed to lead the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence.
Notably, there was no vice-captain during the recently-concluded two-match Test series against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the most notable absence in the squad is that of Mohammed Shami, who was deemed fit and expected to part in the Kiwi Test series but unfortunately he missed out. Shami continues to recover from the ankle injury but will feature in the Ranji Games this month. As he did not return for the Kiwi Test series, the seasoned pacer will surely make his comeback in the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
Yash Dayal misses out
Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mayank Yadav and Prasidh Krishna are named as travelling reserves. The squad has been reduced to 15 members, with uncapped left-arm pacer Yash Dayal, who was part of the Bangladesh Test series, missing out after sustaining a shoulder injury during Uttar Pradesh’s Ranji Trophy match against Bengal in Lucknow.
Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are the two wicket-keeping options for the team while apart the Bumrah, the pace department has Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep as the other two members. Rest of the squad does not have much changes from the Bangladesh Test series.
