Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, made headlines on Wednesday with a public jab at Vice President Kamala Harris while both of their planes were on the tarmac at Chippewa Valley Regional Airport in Wisconsin. Vance, who is running for office as a Republican Vice Presidential candidate, took the opportunity to confront Harris over her avoidance of press questions.
As Vance approached the press gaggle waiting for Harris, he remarked, “Hey, guys. How are you? I just wanted to check out my future plane, but I also wanted to go say hello to the Vice President and ask her why Kamala Harris refuses… why does she refuse to answer questions from the media?” He added, “I also thought that the press gaggle following her might get a little lonely. I, at least, have enough respect for you all, and for the American people you report to, to come and talk to you and to answer some questions.”
‘A little bit of fun,’ says Vance
Vance described his encounter with the Vice President as “a little bit of fun,” noting that although Harris did not acknowledge him as she drove away, he was pleased with his actions. “I’m glad to have done it,” Vance said. “And I’m glad to be here in Wisconsin, actually trying to persuade people to vote for us as opposed to just giving another scripted speech.”
Later that day, Vance referenced the tarmac incident while addressing employees at Wollard International, a manufacturing company. He said, “We’ve had a good day. We actually just saw the vice president’s plane on the tarmac. We landed about the same time that she did, and I went over there because I thought it might be nice to check out this plane that’s going to be mine in a few months, if we all take care of business, and I think we will.”
Vance criticizes Harris’ refusal to answer questions
Vance continued, “But mostly, actually, I want to go and say hello to the journalists who are traveling along with the vice president, because I figured they must be lonely because Kamala Harris doesn’t take any questions.”
The incident drew criticism from Harris’ campaign. Ammar Moussa, the campaign’s director of rapid response, labeled Vance’s actions as “weird” in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Moussa wrote, “Okay just to clarify: JD Vance is flying around the country following Vice President Harris. He approached her plane today because he just wants to talk. And now he’s begging her for a debate? Ummm this is getting weird.”
The exchange highlights the ongoing tensions and public exchanges between Vance and Harris, reflecting the broader political climate as the 2024 election approaches.
