José Mourinho stages bold VAR protest with Laptop display

New Delhi: Jose Mourinho, Fenerbahce’s manager, was booked during his 2-0 win over Antalyaspor after he placed a laptop in front of TV cameras, protesting an offside decision by the referee. The incident happened in the 76th minute while Mourinho’s team was leading 1-0.

Referee Cihan Aydin disallowed Edin Dzeko’s goal, ruling it an offside after a VAR mediation. Mourinho disagreed with the decision and ended up putting a laptop that showed a still image of the incident in front of the ground camera. The referee immediately showed the Portuguese manager a yellow card.

The former Manchester United manager argued later in media that his striker Dzeko was on the side and had shown a frame that clearly proved that the strike was valid.  He pointed out that while it was a convincing win and he was supportive of using VAR, he felt that the referral should be aiding the on-field official to take the correct decision.

Mourinho concluded that he felt he had reacted with composure and only placed his laptop after his team’s analyst, who had the camera angle that gave the view of the complete pitch, showed that the left-back was in the correct position. However, he didn’t protest against his booking.

For Fenerbahce, it was a good win thanks to goals from Dusan Tadic and Thalisson Kelven’s own goal. The win helped them retain second place, with 16 points in the Turkish football competition Super Lig. Having ended as runners-up last season, Mourinho is hopeful that his side will capture the title this time and international breaks won’t break their current rhythm.

Mourinho, though, maintained that international breaks were never a “positive” time for the side as very few players were with the side during these periods. This means there is little preparation and little tactical planning during the international break.

During Fenerbahce 2-0 win, a controversial VAR decision didn’t go down well with Mourinho.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
