Josh Hazlewood ‘frustrated’ after ‘random’ injury forces AUS pacer out of India Tests

New Delhi: Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood isn’t happy by the timing of him getting injured amid the crucial and ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) down under. Hazlewood said that he is frustrated with the injury after he was ruled out of the remaining two Tests of the series due to a strain sustained on his right calf during the third Test in Brisbane which eventually turned out to be a draw.

Hazlewood also missed the second Test (a pink-ball affair in Adelaide) due to a side strain. Scott Boland was roped in as his replacement and Australia won the match by 10 wickets, levelling the series 1-1. Hazlewood described the recent injury as “random”. “Just frustrating really. Ticked every box heading into the (third) Test, I could understand if it was my side again, but it was just a random calf strain,” the right-arm quick told 7NEWS.

“It’s just the timing again, they are only little 2-3 week injuries, it’s just the timing of it, and missing big games is the frustrating thing.” The tall fast bowler was sent for scans after only one over of bowling on Day 4 after hurting his right calf during the warm-up before the play.

However the injury only turned out to be a strain but as per a few reports, it is expected to be serious enough to end his home Test summer early. “Obviously, do a deep dive into it and see what we can come up with… feels pretty random,” the 33-year-old said.

How is Hazlewood coping with injury?

Hazlewood admitted that he has had a history of sides and calves and termed them as the two things that has kept him out for the majority of the last four years. He added that to cure the injuries, he has been adding layers to the defence and is hoping to hit the gym, having “ticked a lot of boxes over the last year.” Hazlewood also said he doesn’t want to rush the recovery process and is hoping to achieve fitness by the two-match Test tour of Sri Lanka in late January and February.

“No rush to get anything in a hurry, it’s just getting everything right. Probably take a few extra days here and there. Ticking things off and getting everything right,” Hazlewood concluded.
