New Delhi: New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is unsure about his future in the T20 international future following his team’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. The Blacks Caps failed to get past the group stage after two wins and as many losses.
The Kiwis produced a lacklustre display in the 17th edition of the marquee tournament, losing to West Indies and Afghanistan. Their two victories came against debutants Uganda and Papua New Guinea (PNG)
Kiwi pacer Trent Boult announced during the tournament that the current edition of the T20 World Cup will be his last, and now Williamson has also cast doubt on his future in the shortest format of the game in international cricket.
When asked if he’d return to lead the Kiwis in the 2026 edition, Williamson said: “Oh, I don’t know.”
New Zealand finished outside of the semifinals of a World Cup for the first time in 10 years. The Black Caps reached three finals with Williamson in the team including the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups, the 2021 T20 World Cup and the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) final, which they won in 2021. Williamson led NZ in three of those four tournaments.
Williamson reflected on New Zealand’s short campaign at the T20 World Cup and said it was a unique experience for the players, who tried their best in challenging conditions.
“But it’s been really unique, a unique experience for all the guys. The conditions have been challenging I think for batters all around, but it’s just about trying to find a way.”
Despite being the last team to begin their campaign New Zealand were out of contention for the Super Eights within the space of four days. Damaging losses on back-to-back matches against Afghanistan and West Indies proved costly for the Black Caps.
