New Delhi: Karun Nair must be wondering what else he has to do to make a comeback in the Indian cricket team. Despite scoring over 700 runs at an insane average of close to 400 in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy, Nair was not considered for selection in India’s squads for the England series and the ICC Champions Trophy.
Nair was dismissed just once in the Vijay Hazare Trophy – in the final against Karnataka and amassed a whopping 779 runs at an average of 389.50. He remained unbeaten in 8 of the 9 innings but missed out in the summit clash as Vidarbha lost the final.
Nair’s astonishing display in VHT raised hopes of an India comeback but the Vidarbha batter and his fans were left disappointed after the latest snub.
The selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar also answered questions on Nair’s snub in the press conference and said that he shouldn’t lose hope and Nair is following that advice.
Nair wants to keep dreaming
“Obviously, the possibility of an India comeback has to be on your mind. If you want to play for the country, you have to keep dreaming. There are these thoughts and dreams in the head but that’s just motivation,” Nair told Hindustan Times.
While several experts and fans questioned Nair’s commission and slammed BCCI for not operating according to the latest guidelines, which also mandate players to prioritise domestic cricket, former opener Sunil Gavaskar backed the decision to not include Nair in the Champions Trophy squad.
Gavaskar said that selectors had to make the difficult decision to leave out Nair due to the lack of space in the Indian ODI set-up.
He also opined that if Nair maintains his prolific form in the upcoming Ranji matches then it would be hard for the selectors to ignore him for the away Test series against England.
Nair made his Test debut in November 2016 against England in Mohali and scored a triple century in his third Test appearance. However, he was unceremoniously dropped months later with his last Test appearance coming against Australia in Dharamshala in March 2017.
