Mumbai: The Bengaluru state government is preparing to celebrate Kempegowda Jayanti on June 27, 2024, that is today. They have announced Bengaluru Habba to commemorate the 515th birth anniversary of Bengaluru’s founder, Shri Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, along with other festivities.
While it is not a declared public holiday, the government organises various events such as exhibitions showcasing his historical documents, screenings of short films about him, and other activities to commemorate his contributions and educate future generations about Kempegowda’s legacy.
Kempegowda Jayanti Date 2024
Kempegowda is deeply revered in the Karnataka region for his significant efforts in fortifying Bengaluru during his rule. Each year, on June 27, the people of Karnataka celebrate Kempegowda Day or Kempegowda Jayanthi to honour his birth anniversary, a tradition initiated by the state government in 2017.
Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the visionary behind modern Bangalore (Kempegowda Jayanthi), was renowned as a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire. Descended from Gauda, he was highly educated and achieved great success as a ruler. Kempegowda, a Vijayanagar feudatory, founded Bangalore in 1537 and later established it as his capital, moving it from Yalahanka. He promoted trade among artisans from various clans, transforming Bangalore into a prominent commercial hub.
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is named after the prominent ruler. Terminal 2 of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has been awarded the 2023 World Special Prize for Interior Design, earning it the title of the ‘World’s most beautiful airport’.
