New Delhi: Even before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 could kick-off, there’s news of a clash likely to be rescheduled. Dark clouds are looming over the home match of defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), scheduled on April 6. The match will be hosted by the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata but the city police haven’t provided the security clearance for it.
As the clash falls on the Hindu festival of Ram Navami, there will be celebrations across the City of Joy. For those unversed, BJP leader Suvendhu Adhikari has already announced that more that 20,000 processions will take place across West Bengal on the holy festival, which would require heightened security measures across the state.
Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly confirmed that the authorities didn’t give a “go-ahead” for the match, after holding two rounds of discussions with the city police. “They have categorically said they won’t be able to provide adequate security. If there’s no police protection, accommodating a 65,000-strong crowd becomes impossible,” he said.
He further added that the CAB has already informed the BCCI about the same and there’s still some time left to take a final call. KKR and LSG both boast strong local support, due to which the clash was expected to be jampacked. It is understood that even during the last season of the cash-rich league, the KKR vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) fixture was also rescheduled due to security reasons.
IPL 2025 opening ceremony
The IPL 2025 is all set to begin at the Eden Gardens on March 22 as KKR will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The match will follow a glittering opening ceremony that will last for about 35 minutes, and there’s news that notable singer Shreya Ghoshal and actress Disha Patani will be setting its tone. The event is likely to be attended by ICC chair Jay Shah and other dignitaries.
Snehasish emphasised that it’s a marquee clash and the demand for its tickets is high. For the opening ceremony, he said that Eden Gardens is hosting it after a long time but refrained to disclose any more details about it.
