New Delhi: The Border-Gavaskar Trophy might be ten days away from a blockbuster start but Virat Kohli’s mania has already taken over Australia. The much-awaited five-Test series between Australia and India will begin with the opening Test scheduled to be held at Perth’s Optus Stadium from November 22 onwards.
Ahead of the high-octane clash, the BGT fever has gripped the country with iconic batter and former captain Virat Kohli being used as a promotional tool to hype the BGT series.
Kohli has featured extensively in Australian newspapers, including on the front page with tabloids even printing Hindi and Punjabi headlines along with English.
Virat Kohli dominates Australian newspapers
Sydney-based tabloid The Daily Telegraph used Kohli’s image on its front page with the Hindi text Yugon Ki Ladai (fight for the ages). Meanwhile, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also featured on the back page of the tabloid with a Punjabi headline Navam Raja accompanied by text – “The New King”- in English.

A lot of @imVkohli in the Australian papers this morning as is the norm whenever India are in town but never expected to see Hindi and Punjabi appearing in the Adelaide Advertiser. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who is unlikely to play in the opening Test due to personal reasons, was surprisingly absent from the adverts. The Australian media might have gone with Kohli due to his fan following Down Under.
Kohli first to reach Perth
Kohli was the first player to reach Australia, reaching Perth on Sunday, well ahead of his teammates. The star batter is going through a lean patch in red-ball cricket and comes on the back of a forgetful home series against New Zealand.
Though Kohli will look to replicate his past performances in Australia, a country where he boasts an incredible record. The former India captain, who has scored only two centuries in the last four years, has notched up six hundreds on Australian soil.
