Kylian Mbappe reflects on ‘special’ feat equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record

New Delhi: Kylian Mbappe described matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally as special in his debut season was “special having scored in a comeback 3-2 win against Legane on Saturday. The France international’s first-half penalty had put Madrid 1-0 ahead at Santiago Bernabeu, before Diego Garcia cancelled it a minute later. Dani Raba, before halftime, had ensured that Leganes were in the lead.

Jude Bellingham scored the leveller before Mbappe’s brace helped Madrid take all three points, helping his tally of goals this season across competitions reach 33 goals. Ivan Zamorano, with 37 goals, is the only player who has scored more times for the Spanish club in his first season with the team.

The striker later noted that while his efforts were to help his side, equalling Ronaldo’s tally was a great achievement. Mbappe, though, reiterated that while scoring goals is important, they also needed to win trophies. The win keeps them in the hunt for La Liga, as they remain level in 63 points with Barcelona, who are at the top of the table, ahead of Barcelona’s clash against Girona on Sunday.

Mbappe’s 33 goals, with 22 of them coming in the league, have come in just 45 games. His amazing effort has kept Madrid in the hunt for La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.

Mbappe noted that this was why they had worked so hard and was confident the team would give their everything to win the trophies. The 26-year-old noted that coming back after the international break, the “rhythm” is broken. Although playing for the National team and the club was difficult, the teams know only how to win.

Carlo Ancelotti praises Kylian Mbappe’s recent form

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti also mentioned that Mbappe was in terrific form, noting that he was more “active, more present in the play”. Further, Ancelotti felt that Mbappe was making a difference in the field. Ancelotti also noted that Mbappe had scored a similar goal in training a day before, like the winner against Leganes.

Mbappe explained that the coaching staff had worked on this, as he felt confident that he could hit a shot like that, and it worked during the game. Madrid now host Real Sociedad in the second leg of the semifinal in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday before playing Valencia in La Liga, and will then play Arsenal in the  first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals

Kylian Mbappe has now equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of 33 goals in debut season for Real Madrid with Chile’s Ivan Zamorano, who had scored 37 goals, having scored more for the Spanish club.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
